Mr Vinod Kumar

Shri Vinod Kumar graduated as Mechanical Engineer from University of Roorkee (Now IIT) in 1972; fifty years of experience in Hydro & Rail-Road Tunnels. After learning departmental tunnelling at NHPC’s Loktak Project, he went on to develop this art at Dulhasti & Chamera-1 projects before being handpicked by Mr. E. Sreedharan as Chief Engineer (Tunnels) for the Konkan Railway Project in 1992 (93 tunnels 84 km). The soft ground tunnels had to be executed departmentally to maintain the time and to avoid contractor’s viability problems. Thereafter he joined a JV of Indian & Canadian Construction company at 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Project where many innovations were done to handle large cavities, tunnelling in hot water and developed unique methods of concrete lining in adverse conditions. Thereafter, he worked at J&K’s Rail Project on behalf of Konkan Railway till 2010.After retirement he continued to serve the private sector and is still active as Adviser to many Public & Private sector organizations. Sh. Vinod Kumar was conferred the LifeTime Achievement award by ITA in 2019 at Mumbai.
