Prof V.M.S.R. Murthy

Prof. V.M.S.R. Murthy Graduated in Mining Engineering from Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (presently VNIT) in 1986. He obtained Master of Technology in Mine Planning and Design from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad (now IIT(ISM) Dhanbad) in 1988 with distinction and ISM Gold Medal. He completed Doctorate in the field of Mechanized Roadway Development from ISM, Dhanbad in 1997. Prof. Murthy worked as a Scientist in CMRI(now CSIR-CIMFR) for 8 years. He joined Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad in 1997. His teaching specializations are Mine Development and Construction, Rock Excavation Engineering, Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology. He introduced a M.Tech. Programme in Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology from 2009 as well as an elective course in B.Tech.(Mining Engg.). Prof Murthy’s research interests are Drilling and Blasting, Mechanical Excavation, Rock characterization and testing for selecting various excavation machinery (TBMs, Drills, Roadheaders, Surface Miners) and Underwater rock/concrete structure blasting. He completed an Indo-Italy DST Funded Project on rock cutting, 8 R&D Projects, 185 research papers, 195 technical reports, 33 EDPs and guided 9 students for their Ph.D. Visited the USA (New Orleans), Europe(Austria, Torino) Myanmar, Canada(Toronto) for technical paper presentations, discussions and field work in the field of rock drilling and blasting and mechanical cutting of rocks. An Erasmus Research Fellow to Politecnico di Torino, Italy fully funded by European Commission. He was selected for Duo-India Fellowship Programme for TBM research in Polito, Turin, Italy. Prof Murthy has held following positions: Head, Department of Mining Engineering. Associate Dean and Dean(International Relations and Alumni Affairs) Presently coordinating the Centre of Rock Excavation Engg., National Committees of MEA, ISRM(India), MoLE(Section 12), MoC(Standing Committeee), Peer Review Committee of NIRM, MoM, GoI Fellow/Life Member of IE(India), ISRMTT, ISRM(I), MEA, TAI, MGMI
