Maj. Gen. (Dr.) B Nagarajan

Maj Gen (Dr) B Nagarajan, is a permanent Commissioned Officer from the Indian Army, which he joined in the Year 1975 and retired from the services on superannuation with effect from 31st May 2013. For the past 5 years, he is working as a Professor in the Geospatial Group of the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kanpur. Prior to joining this assignment he also served as Senior Scientific Consultant on a World Bank assisted programme on Integrated Coastal Zone Management with Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India at Anna University Campus at Chennai, Tamilnadu.

He has a basic degree in Civil Engineering from Madras University (1970-75). He did his Masters in Computer Science from Roorkee University and was awarded "University Gold Medal". He also did PG Diploma on "Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems from Osmania University". He obtained his Masters and Doctoral degree in the field of Geodetic Sciences from Ohio State University, Columbus, USA (1989 -1994). In USA, he served as Research Associate for five years for US Defense Mapping Agency.

On secondment to Survey of India, a scientific organization under Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India, he served as the Director of Geodetic & Research Branch, Survey of India, Dehra Dun which is the specialized directorate of Survey of India, and then on promotion as Additional Surveyor General of India as Head of the "Indian Institute of Surveying and Mapping" at Hyderabad. He is considered to be a top most geodesist in the country having authored five publications and more than 200 papers submitted at various International and National seminars and conferences.

For his achievements in the field of Surveying and Mapping, he was awarded the "National Geomatics Award - 2008" by "Indian Society of Geomatics", Dept. of Space, Hyderabad. He has served for 38 years in the Indian Army/ Survey of India in various capacities viz., executive, research and teaching. He has professional affiliations as Fellow of Institution of Engineers and Member of Institution of Surveyors, Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Indian Society of Geomatics, Institution of Military Engineers and Indian National Cartographic Association.

Presently he is also serving as expert member of various committees set up by : Department of Space, Ministry of Earth Sciences and Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and also serving as Chairman, National Geodesy Program set by DST, Government of India.
